Steam on the Lausanne-Échallens-Bercher Railway

One of the lovliest, yet least known narrow gauge lines in Switzerland is the LEB in the Canton Vaud. The town names in its title outline the route it traverses, going from the cosmopolitan city of Lausanne to the quaint farming village of Bercher, right in the middle of the "bread basket" of western Switzerland. Along the way, gorgeous views of the adjacent fields and forests enchant the traveler, while the Jura mountains are visible to the west. It is safe to say, the LEB is one of the most idyllic lines in the Romandie, full of original charm. While the company does a good job of operating a dense suburban commuter service, when the steam train comes out to play on select weekends in the summer or for special charter hires, the nostalgic magic of yesteryear comes with it. The following pictures give a small impression of this worthwhile railway and its lone kettle, the 1910-built SLM 0-6-0 tank engine G 3/3 Nr. 8.
