The Kolín Sugar Beet Railway

The Kolínská řepařská drážka is the last of its kind, 600 mm, agricultural railway in the Czech Republic. It was originally opened in 1894 on the outskirts of Kolín and served the local sugar refinery until it became defunct in 1966. Since 2007 a museum and tourist operation has restarted, led by volunteer work and supported with grants from EU regional development programs as well as sponsorship from the local Toyota Peugeot Citroën Automobile (TPCA) car factory. Just recently in April 2011 the line was extended from Vyrovna to Písečný mlýn.

Of the original 10.6 kilometers, close to 3 km of track have now been completely reconstructed. Most impressive is the authentically rebuilt railway station in Kolín-Sendražice, replete with guest facilities, rolling stock shed and a small rail yard. The open air coaches of the Kolin Sugar Beet railway provide an wonderful excursion atmosphere and fresh air feeling, no matter if one is a railway buff or not! Accordingly, the line is a big draw for families with kids. The unique ambience of the railway embedded in lush fields and rolling hills is truly romantic, the small towns in the distance and their distinctive church towers capping the idyllic setting.

Aside from a few motor tractors, also an original kettle serves the line, a ČKD 0-4-0 type BS80. Nr. 10 in this case dates from 1951.
